Ogden High School Class of 1956- 55 Year Class Reunion

HI, CLASS OF '56 TIGERS!
It's time for our 55th Class Reunion!
Mark August 20, 2011 on your calendar!

One VERY cool schoolhouse
2ND REUNION UPDATE:   Hey, Tigers,  wonder of wonders!  The pictures of our 55th Reunion are on this blog now!  I'm very sorry it took so long to get them posted.  Tried a couple of things because I didn't want to mix the pictures from the 50th with the 55th reunion pictures and they didn't work, but we have both sets up now!  The 55th reunion pictures are in a slide show on this page, and the 50th reunion pictures are on the 50th reunion web site (links to both are beneath the slide show).  You can copy any of the pictures you want from either web site.  We had some very good photographers and we thank them for the pictures and memories.  Enjoy!

The reunion was a great success!  The tour was wonderful!  The auditorium has been restored to its awesome beauty and is truly a site to behold.  The changes made and additions to the school have made it a first class school with facilities to be envied.  Ogden High has moved well into the next century with its high tech equipment and labs.

Myrna (Barnes) Burbank deserves our many thanks for all the work she did to ensure a successful reunion enjoyed by all 158 attendees.  The reunion committee spent many hours planning for it and worked hard that day to ensure it was a success and enjoyed by everyone.

Several people were taking pictures at the Reunion, and as soon as I receive the disks with them, I will add the pictures to the sidebar.  Our Class of '56 donated a substantial amount to the restoration project,  Myrna has listed the amount below in her letter.  I always knew we had a great class, but you alumni showed the other OHS classes and others just how GR-R-E-A-T we are!

There is a place where you may comment on the reunion and/or restoration of the school on this page, so please don't be shy -- add your thoughts.

Myrna wrote a letter to everyone;  here it is:

"Dear Classmates:

"Thanks so much to the 158 who attended out 55th class reunion. On Saturday morning August 20 at Ogden High School we had a tour of the newly renovated area completed thus far. The auditorium was breath taking, it has been noted as one of the nations most beautiful.

"If you did not attend the reunion, I highly recommend that you go to the open house to be held on September 24. You won't believe the new two gyms and the exercise room. Thanks to Judy Webber and Carolyn Nebeker/Rasmussen and their helpers for a great job in organizing and hosting the tour.

"We can be proud of our class of 56. We have donated $83,522.50 towards the renovation of OHS. Several pledge sheets were picked up at the reunion so the number will grow. If you are interested call 801-737-7305

"A continental breakfast followed the tour. The committee and classmates Pat Vandenberg Adrian, Peggy Newman Clark, and even spouses, Carol DeGroot, Larry Meckley and Leon Clark pitched in to help. They chopped fruit, set out food and helped clean up.

"Saturday evening we enjoyed socializing. Appetizers were provided with funds left from out T-shirt sale at our 50th class reunion. We listened to 50's music while viewing scrapbooks from our school days and past reunions. After dinner and a program we had a special tribute to our deceased classmates. ( total to date 77) There were a total of 406 who received diplomas, however we have nearly 500 on our class list.

"We had several attend our reunion for the first time, many have never missed a reunion. While most came from all over Utah several came from California, Idaho, Nevada, Texas and Washington.

"Thanks to all who sent pictures for our scrapbooks and also for your help in locating classmates. Please keep us informed when you change your address and ladies, your name.

"A special thanks to our committee who did so much to make our reunion a success.

Don't  miss  the  fun!   Plan  to  attend  the  2011  55-Year  Reunion  August  20,  2011!

Jog your memory!  Do you remember hearing  these statements attributed to 1955?  (I think every generation has heard them but not with those incredible prices!)

Comments made in the year 1955!

‘I’ll tell you one thing, if things
keep going the way they are,
it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.
‘Have you seen the new cars coming out next year?
It won’t be long before $1, 000.00 will
only buy a used one.’

‘If cigarettes keep going up in price, I’m going to quit;
20 cents a pack is ridiculous.
‘If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to
hire outside help at the store.’

‘When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would
someday cost 25 cents a gallon.
Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.’

‘I’m afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they
let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in ‘GONE WITH THE WIND’,
it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.’
‘I read the other day where some scientist thinks it’s possible to put
a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some
fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas.’
‘Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for
$50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn’t surprise me if someday
they’ll be making more than the President.

‘I never thought I’d see the day all our kitchen appliances would
be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

‘It’s too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few
married women are having to work to make ends meet.
‘It won’t be long before young couples are going to have to hire
someone to watch their kids so they can both work.’
‘I’m afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a
whole lot of foreign business.’
‘Thank goodness I won’t live to see the day when the Government
takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are
electing the best people to government.’
‘The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather,
but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.’

‘There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend. It
costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.’

‘No one can afford to be sick anymore. At $15.00 a day in
the hospital, it’s too rich for my blood.’
‘If they think I’ll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.’

Those of you who are coming from out of town, plan to stay awhile. There are many changes in Ogden. Listed below are some things to see and do while you're in Ogden.

What To Do In Ogden
Live Entertainment/Bar
Urban Bleu, an Ogden-based band that plays progressive blues, both originals and interpretations of classics of the genre, takes comfort in the style. The members use it to salve the wounds of a very real tragedy that came into their lives on December 13,2009. That day as bassist/cofounder Django Lachlan (aka Timothy McLaughlin) drove home in perilous weather conditions from a gig in Craig, Colorado, the band’s tour van skidded on ice near Rock Springs, Wyoming. The 1988 Toyota van slammed into the rear of a slow-moving semi. Lachlan’s girlfriend, Carmel Sehr, was sleeping in the passenger seat. She died at the scene. Lachlan suffered relatively minor injuries, as did Urban Bleu’s other founder, guitarist/singer Aaron Fowler, and Fowler’s companion , Norma Rasmussen. Aaron Fowler, Django Lachlan and drummer, Jim Wright perform with their band Urban Bleu at the Wine Cellar in Ogden.” ......by Linda East Brady, Standard Examiner Staff.
